Tom Dyer Starts a Substack
The beginning of the beginning
Okay ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first ever Tom Dyer’s Green Monkey Noize on Substack. You might be wondering why I’m doing this. Well, maybe I’m wondering about it too. I’ve been told that my Green Monkey Records MailChimp emails are just too damn long and nobody can read anything that damn long and they just need to get to the facts, just the facts man, cuz life is too damn short. Well okay, that’s fine. Sure. But somewhere it’s gotta be Tom blathers on about a whole bunch of stuff that is really probably not that important but might be still slightly entertaining. Or even thoughtful, once in a while. Maybe.
Way back when I started my original Green Monkey Records web page in 2009, I used to have a column called Tom’s Rant and it was whatever crossed my mind on that day. Sometimes short, sometimes long. Well that’s what’s going to happen here. Some days it’s going to be long, thought out (thoughtful?), very detailed, researched, and documented. Other days it’s just going to be a bunch of bullshit I made up on the spot. You can still find those old things if you go back and look at greenmonkeyrecords.com and click on Tom’s Rant (we’re going to be updating the Green Monkey Records page very soon, by the way praise da lord).
Those Tom’s Rants were kinda like a diary almost. I went back and looked at them years later and I went, “Wow, that’s what was going on at that time.” Some of it was extremely trivial, little bits of life. It wasn’t just, “Here’s the big important shit we have to push.” It was just chatty Cathy stuff so that’s probably where we’re going.
That said I don’t think this Substack thingster is just intended to be my promotional writings for Green Monkey Records. Whatever I feel like writing about, by Gawd I’m going to write about it. Could be politics, could be sports, could be some sweet band that I saw in downtown Olympia last night, could be Mom. Who the hell knows? We shall just see.
Will I take requests? Who knows? My dance card ain’t that full. Just drop me a line and we’ll see what happens.
Finally here’s important news from our official sponsor, Green Monkey Records. We have just released Jon Strongbow’s Music for Intense Cities. Jon’s been dead for a few years now but this somehow escaped our attention until now. It is pretty groovin’ cool! Go to bandcamp and buy it right now!
All the dough goes to the family and local charities. We don’t keep a penny.
We’ve got a ton of stuff coming out in the next couple of months:
Singles from Kaz Murphy, Across 35th and Von Cube
The first new album from The Purdins in about 500 years
I’m getting to record the third Icons album, our first album since 2011, and I’m getting ready to record a Pipe Organ album at the First Christian Church with teen sensation Sebastian Herb. Which is going to be awesome
And more
Don’t get bored,
td

Welcome to Substack Tom!
